DEAN BLOTTO GRAY VS PETER CIRILLI
-
Welcome to Volume One of the Blotto Versus Book Series!
For many years I’ve been lucky to have shared photo shoot locations around the world with a host of photographers while shooting campaigns and documenting events. What has always fascinated me is the unique perspective and entirely different scene translation one photographer has to the other regarding subject matter and theme. This leads me to believe there is truly no singular angle or moment ever. An individual’s photographic eye cannot be imitated or duplicated, the same goes with creativity.
What I hope to achieve with this book is showing you that variety, over the course of thirty-one subject based spreads.
I’ve always respected and admired Peter Cirilli’s photography and the way he carries himself in terms of getting it done and treating his talent and team with respect and care. He’s a great photographer that has built up a healthy catalog in a short amount of time, respect. When I brought this idea of a photo battle to him, he was all in.
The rules were simple. We agreed on a certain number of snowboard, skateboard and photography related subjects, only submitting one photograph per category. These images would be arranged side-by-side, clearly marked what the subject matter is and who the image belongs to. But here was the kicker: neither of us were to see the book in the making.
So, let me introduce you to the third member of this project: Lance Violette.
Lance and I go way back, like the late 1990’s way back. He’s been graphic designing forever and is truly a master of his trade. More importantly, he’s always down to collaborate on interesting ideas and story-telling opportunities, so when Peter and I approached him with this concept and asked if he’d like to take part, he simply said “let’s do this.” He would design the book one hundred percent to his liking, Peter and I would have no input beyond the categories, as we trust Lance wholeheartedly. Neither photographer saw what the other submitted until it came back from the printer and was shipped out to you.
With that, I bring you Blotto Vs. Cirilli.
